Out & About #740 | Week #76 Quarantine Update Feat. Chocolate Shortbread

Despite September nearing the corner, the GTA was met with scorching temperatures and intense dry heat. Constant hydration was urged for folks in the field, while sunscreen was applied liberally even for brief errands in the neighbourhood.

Atrocious amounts of residual grit from nearby construction sites have coated my car's exterior comprehensively. The situation prompted more frequent triggers of the windshield washer lever, and consequential depletion of the visibility-enhancing fluid. A trip to Home Depot was scheduled to restock prior to the rapidly approaching fall and winter seasons.

By the conclusion of the excursion, I had identified an appetite for salad - precisely freshii (NOT fresh). The nearest location known to me was embedded within the Erin Mills Town Centre food court, yet entering the franchise name into Google Maps revealed an even closer outpost.

I looped about the median to request an Oaxaca Bowl with Chicken and Steak. Its accompanying sauce revealed itself a sriracha-like potency, which far exceeded my tolerance. Beyond this aspect, I was quite pleased with the $12.99 purchase.

Other munchies of the week included dimsum takeout from BestCo in the form of lotus paste-filled jian dui, soft-boiled eggs, oddly savoury-chewy Phoenix Cookies, an Espresso Frappé (homemade, of course), and Oreo-coated Pepero.

By Friday afternoon, I had departed my fortress of hardship (read: mountain of emails and endless spreadsheets) for a much-needed trimming of split ends. Having not stepped foot into a salon in over one year, my original intent had been to reserve the opportunity for a West Coast establishment I had been eyeing. In light of recent COVID news, the vacation was delayed with no definite timeline for reinstatement.

An alternative was to be sought - one that didn't involve the treacherous drive downtown.

The geographic coordinates of the pre-determined destination was not far from Mississauga's very own Koreatown. We proceeded to Thirstea, where a White Peach Black Tea and Roasted Oolong Milk Tea with Grass Jelly and Mini Taro Balls were procured.
Next up was P.A.T., where I laid eyes on the infamous Walkers Shortbread. Vague memories from childhood visits to my grandparents' humble abode swirled in, followed by recollection SK's affinity for the packaged treat. Unfortunately, the package did not live up to expectations: cravings were left unfulfilled.

Dinner needs were tended to with the assistance of Mac's Sushi.

I woke to splendid Sunday weather, yet was remained in a state too groggy to enjoy it.

Snoopy and Larry were swell companions in ensuring relief of carryover anxiety.

Creations of the week included:

1) Chocolate Shortbread

With the dismal discovery of Walkers' neither buttery nor dainty profile, I took matters into my own hands. Revisiting Sunday Baking's formula, a portion of the cake flour was swapped for cocoa powder (20g) and black cocoa powder (5g), totalling just under 200g of flour. A chocolate edition was in the works.

The texture revealed itself rather sturdy, welcoming the circular indents that I would proceed to poke along the length of each section. Its edges were sharp, bearing a mild disparity from the sandy ridges I had anticipated.
Nonetheless, they were delicious and promptly devoured in under 48 hours.

2) Mini Levain Cookies

In the absence of a proper chocolate chip cookie recipe on Sunday's video repertoire, I opted for her take on New York's adored Levain cookie that had swept food channels internationally some two years ago.

In place of walnuts were toasted pecans and in place of chocolate chips were a medley of roughly chopped Surfin and Piccoli White couverture. The endeavour consumed more of morning than anticipated, for my baking hiatus had rendered my brown sugar rock solid.

Delayed but not dispirited, I persevered, ultimately producing a cookie that was as airy as it was crisp, yet as toothsome as it was gooey.
