Vancouver Voyage | DAY 20: Mango Yummy

8/21/2016

"If I'm not eating, I'm most likely editing. (Or tending to some school/work/errand-running business.)"

Very few of those that frequent this space are the same entities that accompany me on my various munching adventures, but those that have grown accustomed to my habits can affirm that the above statement holds true in all circumstances.

Regular replenishing of fluids is necessary, as is getting up and moving about when majority of the day has already been spent sitting at a desk, staring at a screen - sounds familiar doesn't it?
Following a speed-editing session of two days' worth of images, it only seemed right to treat myself for my efforts.

Brisk walking along the Fraser River was performed to first ease up dormant muscles in the lower limbs. This was succeeded by a quick stop - ie. errand-running - at Daiso and then an impromptu visit to Mango Yummy.

The tropical fruit-based dessert parlour has two locations: one adjacent to Richmond-Brighouse on No. 3 Road, and the other in a quieter plaza on Capstan Way. I had actually planned to drop by the original location earlier during the week, but the absolutely surly attitude and despicable customer service from the opening staff had me immediately turn on my heels after ten minutes of waiting.

Those who are incapable of communicating in a pleasant, courteous manner have no business in gaining my business - homograph usage unintended.

Given the numerous positive reviews though, I still wanted to give the spot a try. Mango Yummy's second location is incredibly easy to spot in the Supermarket 2000 plaza; the orange lettering and cartoonized mango fruit say it all.

The space is much more narrow in comparison to the first location, only offering a maximum seating capacity of twenty-ish people.  Strategic placement of the utensil stand and cashier enable takeout customers to maneuver in and out of the shop easily, while dine-in dessert goers can head directly for one of the dark brown-mahogany tables.

!In fear that the experience would be inefficient enough to force me to postpone dinnertime, I decided to call and place my order over the phone. Ranked the number one item on their menu was the Signature Mango and Grapefruit Sago. Upon closer examination, it was discovered that the item had even won this year's Diner's Choice Award for the Best Mango Sago!

The preparation-cashier duo was still in the midst of preparing my order as I strolled in. "We want to keep it fresh!" the girl at the cashier cheerfully stated.

The first bite had me relishing in the fresh, ripe chunks of mango, thoroughly convinced that I had made the correct decision.
The second bite had me wondering why we had insisted on re-visiting Juice King's stall at Yaohan despite the steady inflation, likely synthetic ingredients, and sickeningly rich aftertaste.
By the third spoonful (and first sip of the underlying coconut milk and crushed ice mixture), I made the sudden realization that the cup's contents were already half-demolished.

When presented with an assortment of flavour options, I rarely choose Mango over Green Tea. However, this Signature Mango and Grapefruit Sago was enough to persuade me to diverge from my long-established matcha preferences to attempt the sweet, fruity sensation more often.
Mango Yummy's signature dish was a classic dessert done right: generous chunks of sweet mango, an abundance of chewy sago, a lovely blend of evaporated and coconut milks, and a refreshing scoop of grapefruit pulp.
