Out & About #90 | Mother's Day Brunch at Union Social Eatery

5/10/2015

We were kind of late to the Mother's Day reservation game, but luckily there was still a slot at Union Social Eatery.

My parents had tried this restaurant a few times before, but this was my first time seeing the black-yellow-white logo.

The place was generally empty when we arrived, despite being the morning of Mother's Day.  We were immediately greeted and sat down at a comfortable booth with sufficient window light for photo-taking.

With its extensive selection of brunch options and general lunch appetizers/mains, it took us a while before we could finally decide on what to order. Our server, a cheerful girl named Pat, had already came by our table twice before, but remained completely patient with us until we were ready on her third visit.

We ordered two Mimosas and a Pabst Blue Ribbon Draft Beer to start, followed by Steak & Eggs, Grilled Dijon Salmon, and Banana Coconut Crusted Chicken, all of which arrived on our table within a reasonable time frame.

The Banana Coconut Crusted Chicken was the first dish that caught my eye. Intrigued by its unique combination of ingredients, I decided to try this out, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.
The heart-shaped chicken breast was coated with toasted coconut flakes, giving it a nice, crispy exterior, while the inside was as tender as could be!
Chicken is very difficult to prepare; most restaurants tend to overcook the meat, causing it to be come hard and tough, and sadly, that's also what I have been accustomed to. Naturally, I was in complete awe when I was able to cut into the meat with essentially no effort at all. The tangy banana sauce that accompanied it was the perfect complement, bringing visual interest to the dish and heightening the dining experience by pairing unexpected flavours together.

The Steak & Eggs came with a (non-alcoholic) Strawberry Shooter, which resembled a very thick smoothie more than an actual shot. Nonetheless, its refreshing and fruity properties made it a great way to finish off a meal.

I'm generally a picky person when it comes to meat, as I find that it's never really prepared to reach its full potential. The Grilled Dijon Salmon proved to be exceptional though: it had been prepared in such a way that the exterior managed to maintain crispy (even with the lovely, creamy sauce poured on top), while the inside was so soft that it appeared as if it had been steamed. The addition of dill to the Dijon sauce was also another great touch.

A cappuccino was ordered to conclude the brunch. I normally would've requested a dessert as well, but the Banana Coconut Crusted Chicken had been so delectable that the thought of saving room for dessert completely flew over my head. (Oh well, there's always next time!)

We received impeccable service all throughout our meal, and I know I can't wait to come back and try the other dishes!
