But I did begin to mentally prepare for the store closures accompanying the statutory holiday.
'Tis the season for cookies, especially those decked in sprinkles - aka more sugar. Leading up to the big day, I engaged in a couple more variants compared to previous years, and even acquired a substantial selection from the external world. We also have more than enough boxes of chocolate to entertain our sugar quota, but even with all that said, tradition denied the foregoing of our annual rollout of festive cutouts. With my immediate surroundings graced with a generous dusting of glistening graupel, the mood had been set. Ingredients were assembled on the countertop; mini-marshmallow-topped hot chocolate in hand and Christmas playlist blaring in the background, I initiated the lengthy process. It wasn't without hiccups though, for my fairly recently secured silicon whisk succumbed to an all-too-timely detachment. Alas, the show must go on. I proceeded with the rest of SK's recipe, trimming the sugar quantity as needed. The divine ruler of the kitchen, as coined by orangecane, is indeed impressive, though sometimes a tad too heavy-handed on the sweetener and baking soda. Some few hours later, the shapes were ready for their final round of embellishment. By mid-afternoon, the house filled with the warm haze of cookies. Within each sleigh was tender snap of crispened butter and gentle grit of multi-toned sprinkles. I banished the odd bits from the table, and eagerly smoothed out the vibrant Peanuts tablecloth I had excitedly snapped up over Black Friday sales. Cold brew poured and Santa hat donned, it was time to revel in the morning's meticulous efforts. Chocolate in various forms eased us into the evening, from Purdy's assorted truffles to Godiva's adorable hot chocolate toppers. The cute little discs fit snugly into my Balzac's diner mug, eventually disintegrating into a luscious pool of silky goodness. Quite frankly, the imminent arrival of Christmas hadn't crossed my mind until a coworker casually addressed the topic of "vacation", as if we had every need for one. I didn't. But I did begin to mentally prepare for the store closures accompanying the statutory holiday. Christmas dinner was enjoyed with the presence of jumbo shrimp cocktail, oven-roasted turkey, maltose-glazed carrots, and locally sourced Proscuittino. The meal teemed with flavours of nostalgia, even more so with the household tradition of Blue Christmas serenading our every bite. Merry Christmas to all!
