Out & About #646 | Week #16 Quarantine Update Feat. Tatsu's Bread

Much like sushi, carbohydrates is a food group I could never possibly surrender. Complex or refined, they deserve distinct placement in my diet and serve as valuable sources of energy.

Day-to-day activities rarely deviate from the standard cycle of work, errand-running, chore-doing, and cooking, so when the opportunity to make a departure from routine arises, I'll gladly oblige.

I had bookmarked Tatsu's Bread for several seasons, though had constantly put off the drive as neither its coordinates nor operating hours were in agreement with my schedule. As the loaf on our countertop began to wither away to nothingness, I took it as a sign to venture along Lakeshore and snap up the last of the day's assortment.

To the left were pastries: individual cake slices and pudding cups; to the right were the various varieties of bread. Situated in the centre were cookies, croissants, muffins, and the like. A chalkboard menu hung high on the wall, just behind the cashier.

We took to a range of items before retreating back into the car, requesting disposable forks for consumption as the dining floor remained closed. With the exception of the Egg Bread and Cheese Stick, the remainder of our purchases were subject to HST - quite regrettable as these two happened to be the highlights of the visit.
Devoured in the car were a Chocolate Roll Cake, Lemon Roll Cake, and small Chocolate Croissant. Despite the croissant being less flaky than desired, the roll cakes were an interesting afternoon snack. Exceptionally moist with a layer of jam sandwiched between the sponge and whipping cream, neither piece proved particularly satiating. Lemon was the airier specimen of the two, unsurprisingly, while Chocolate featured a rather tart profile (with questionable bits of crackle reminiscent of crushed eggshells).

Consumed at a later point in time were two Pecan Tarts (not me) and an inexplicably mushy Potato Bagel.
The void for butteriness persisted as we proceeded with a caffeine stop.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew secured, I was prompted to embark on Mall Run #4.

Sherway Gardens was as serene as could be on a weekday afternoon. Majority of its retailers saw no lineups; perhaps those with the highest traffic were Lululemon and the Apple Store. Yet, the most stunning sight was that of shoppers following the arrow stickers on the floor, flowing forth in compliance with the shopping centre's protocols.

The donning of masks was another common sight - a stark contrast to Square One, which not only boasted the highest amount of foot traffic, but the lowest rate of mask-wearing (approximately 40%). Yorkdale was in close second with approximately 65% of customer compliance in terms of masks, but minimal sense of physical distancing.

Our journey enabled a visit to Canada Goose's "The Journey" outpost, a store outfitted with interactive displays and panoramic projections instead of merchandise. A special Cold Room had been installed to mimic the conditions of a Canadian winter, encouraging customers to try on some of the brand's signature padded jackets.
We refrained from this act out of COVID concerns, though took pleasure in learning about the conception of the room and its independent drainage system. Frankly speaking, the room was quite mild in spite of the surrounding layers of frozen mist; the windchill accompanying treacherous -30 C winters could not be accurately captured within the space.

Maneuvering about the space in the presence of other obedient shoppers, we found the mall to be more pleasant than its GTA competitors (namely Square One). That said, observing several members of food kiosks handle orders with face shields in the absence of masks was quite alarming, especially given that the food was positioned directly below them.

Back home, we enjoyed a Kung Fu Lite Fruit Tea with Basil Seeds and Miso Butter Cookies from a lover of stars and pigs.

An eagerly anticipated package from the Vancouver Aquarium arrived later that same day.

Supporting the organization via purchases of magnets and my longtime object of pink, fluffy affection was the least I could do to facilitate funding for sea creatures of my second home.

Allow me to introduce Larry, the newest member of my primary household:

Creations of the week include:

1) Fruit Cocktail Potato Salad, otherwise known as our default celebratory dish.
2) Turkey-Dill Meatballs and Fettuccine

Preparatory procedures for both items landed me into the depths of the night prior to a lengthy hike in Collingwood.

4) Bossam

The third (and most successful!!) instalment materialized following tips from foodielove and her steering towards an unexpected source of success.

5) Eggplant and Sweet Onion Sautée (w/ Sweet Potatoes) - termed Weekend Cooking Madness Part 2

6) Oven-Broiled Beef Chuck Flap - termed Weekend Cooking Madness Part 3

Rare it is not to be intimidated by cooking meat (pun indeed intended). Chancing across the option of oven broiling yielded the precise amount of high, dry heat needed to cook beef in a grill-like setting.
Obviously, the char wasn't there. That said, one could not complain for the nominal (nonexistent?) marinating duration and cooking time.
