Out & About #36 | Summer Hangouts #2: Waffle Sandwiches + BBQ

8/15/2014

A seriously hectic Friday, I spent the morning of the 15th bussing down to Pacific Mall to run an errand and meet up with a friend before heading off to another friend's birthday party.

After meeting up with my awesome dongsaeng friend, running my errand (aka printing some customized t-shirts), we sat down for lunch at the food court.

I ordered a Smoked Turkey sandwich from a stall called Nicola's Cafe that specialized in Belgian waffles, but instead of plain bread, I made a special request to change it to a waffle sandwich. At first, the mother-son duo gave me quite a number of strange looks, and repeatedly asked if I was certain I wanted to put a savoury turkey filling inside two sweet waffles before finally agreeing to make it for me.

To be honest, the waffle wasn't as sweet as they had described it. It was quite doughy, but still managed to be crisp and chewy at the same time. And best of all, it worked well in a sandwich!

My friend is a huge street food-junkie, and ordered skewers of curry fish balls, shui mai, and octopus, in addition to the recently popular twisted potato skewer (which was also seen at ITALFEST and the Richmond Night Market).

Later on we stopped for bubble tea at Chatime, which I didn't even know had opened a location at Pacific Mall until I saw it. I had originally thought that the closest one was at Commerce Gate.
I also picked up some matcha-themed snacks (because who doesn't love matcha right?!).

Korean beauty products have been this gradually growing trend in North America, so it wasn't much of a surprise to discover that yet another store selling cosmetics from the country renowned for producing 'dance machine' idols had opened. The store went by the name of Multi Brand and carried items from innisfree, Etude House, and Too Cool for School, a brand that is less commonly seen here.

And what better way to end the trip off by spotting a ginormous mango perched atop of a few crates of real mangoes? The shaved ice on the menu looked very inviting, but as fate would have it, bubble tea had already been obtained, meaning that it was simply meant to be eaten on a separate trip.

What followed afterwards was a short trip to First Markham Place and my friend's birthday BBQ at a rather spacious park.

And so concludes another adventure in Markham!
