[out & about #4] Expensive Taiwanese Food + Hand Cream Mania

9/22/2013

Lunching in Markham has now become part of my post-physio treatment routine now. And this time, my mom wanted to try out Beef Noodle King, which is just behind the First Markham Place plaza.
Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the interior deco; it was rather unique for a Taiwanese restaurant: quilted velvet booths and simple printed walls that gave off a modern aura with a nod towards a classic vintage theme. To be extra saavy and laptop-user-friendly, there were plugs underneath almost each booth and free Wi-Fi to boot.

It's quite a shame that the food and decor didn't really compliment each other all that well though.
We ordered tomatoes in pickled plum sauce, thinking it would be something along the lines of a cooked tomato dish in tangy Taiwanese-style sauce. But it ended up being this thing (And trust me, the photos make it look better than it actually was =P).

And we paid $5.99 for it. I honestly could have remade this exact dish with $5.00 left to spare! Sliced tomatoes with dried plum powder sprinkled on top was so not worth the hype. Though the taste wasn't bad at all, I really could have done without releasing $5.99 out into the food service sector.

My mom also ordered a beef dish that I can't remember the name of, in addition to a green bean noodle bowl.

As I'm a total oily-red-meat-pan-fried-in-more-oil-phobic, I steered clear of the beef dish and tried the glass noodle bowl instead.

The soup was a simple canned broth, the bok choy was undercooked, and the meatballs...well, the meatballs were decently good. Again though, it wasn't worth the $12 it was charging for. Heck, none of the items were worth what they cost.

And though service wasn't bad, the staff weren't exactly the cheeriest people ever.

Well, whatever. I know I'm not going back to this place again.
Part 2 of the day involved embarking on a long journey inside the mall to find running shoes and hand creams.

My running shoes had been fine, actually. That is, until I left them on top of an air vent that spat out heat for 3 weeks straight, causing the toe to melt off. So yeah, since athletic shoes are necessary for playing badminton, I was left with no choice but to go shoe shopping.

After 2 hours of walking around and trying on shoes, I finally found a pair.

Black and white. Perfect for this year's fall trend.

Which leads me to talk about two things:

1) FALL IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING THIS YEAR!!
It's not just some stupid one week duration of crisp autumn mornings and delightful sunshine - NO, fall is actually lasting a bit longer this year! *feeling grateful* I can actually break out the fall fashion and not be forced to dive directly into winter's down jackets from scorching summer's tee and shorts =D

2) I bought fall-scented hand creams from Bath & Body Works.
Determined to try pumpkin pie and/or use pumpkin puree in my future cooking endeavours, I thought I'd give myself a little olfactory pleasure by investing in some fall-them hand creams (which I am DEFINITELY in need of due to uni's harsh school soaps). I also had a 20% coupon that was only applicable to items purchased within this weekend so why not? =)

After one week of use, I realized that the chances of the unbelievably minute (yet oh-so-expensive) Holika Holika hand cream I purchased last time lasting beyond three weeks and into winter would be extremely slim. So picking up these was definitely a good idea. I mean, I'm already 100% in love with the amount of moisture and pumpkin-y scent packed into the Hard Working Hand & Body Cream! ^  ^

P.S. Do you know how positively  annoying it is to get arrows to point the way you want them to?! (`Δ´)
P.S. 2 Although fall automatically = school, I'm still not pleased that I already have two lab reports and two assignments to do less than two weeks into the school year. ヽ(;´Д`)ノ *SIGH*
