Out & About #220 | Port Credit Adventures

4/17/2016

I'm Canadian. This statement alone should prompt words of comfort and sympathy for the seemingly endless months of snow and harsh weather we receive during the winter months.

So when Mother Nature decides that it's finally time for spring to make an appearance over on the East Coast, you really can't blame us for ditching our regular stroll through the mall for some Vitamin D-absorbing action by the waterfront.

If you happened to be driving westbound on Lake Shore that balmy afternoon, there was a possibility you spotted a blue cardigan-sporting being sprawled out on the rocks with her camera gear in tow. Approximately thirty minutes passed before I moved from my preferred hangout location; it was undeniably comfortable for a simple arrangement of sedimentary material.

By the time my friend had secured a parking spot in decently close proximity, I was already reeking of that awkward burnt "sun smell".
I was craving ice cream, but she had a severe pre-work hankering for fast food. After casual waltzing into and out of Yeh!'s (their crepes had smelled heavenly!), we made our way over to The Burger's Priest.

Given the gleamingly gorgeous weather, it didn't come as a surprise that the very few tables inside the restaurant had already been occupied upon our arrival. A short lineup was also forming at the cashier.

The Token, or in simpler terms - the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, was our choice. The new addition to the menu was a slightly more health-conscious alternative; instead of regular beef patties, the smaller burger comprised of mild buffalo chicken, blue cheese, lettuce, and tomato. By no means was it a particularly spectacular item: the bun was the dry side and the blue cheese was more mushy than we would have liked. However, it arrived quickly and managed to banish our late lunch famine.

But of course, one can only stride so far on the calorie intake of a half portion of Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. I was dragged into Smoke's without much time to think.
Picture
Both of us wanted a small savoury snack, and agreed upon the Smoke's Jr. Combo. Included was a Snack Size Traditional Poutine, which was, in fact, relatively large, and a juice box. The combo totalled a measly five dollars, though I'm not quite sure the value was justified.
Despite the top layer of fries being crispy, the pieces located towards the bottom of the box were unappealing and spongy from gravy overdose. The cheese curds, while properly squeaky, didn't melt in the manner we had wished. The bottom quarter of the box was left untouched as we moved onto our next stop.

Alas, the junk food tour could not be complete without dessert. Just a few metres from Smoke's was Scoops' indigo purple storefront. We marched up the steps and joined the line of eager ice cream-goers.

Quite the cozy little shop, Scoops featured three different types of lighting fixtures, an extensive selection of Homemade Artisan and Non-Artisan flavours, and enough sugar and waffle cones to satisfy the child in each of us.

There were three members of staff working the store in the afternoon, each equally overwhelmed with the amount of traffic. However, they managed their operations exceptionally well, providing samples as requested and revealing wide, genuinely enthusiastic smiles to each customer in line.

After a short period of indecisiveness, we made our flavour selections: Blood Orange Sorbet, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Pistachio Nut.

The cones were beyond heavenly and hit the spot perfectly!

But let's be honest: Was there ever a time that strolling by the waterfront on a warm, yet breezy day not made ideal with an ice cream cone in hand? I didn't think so.

Truthfully, with more spring weather around the corner, I'm drooling at the mere thought of Scoops' assorted Artisan flavours.
