Out & About #195 | Dimsum at Summit Garden + Afternoon Explorations

2/6/2016

Those unfamiliar with the dining style will call it "tapas", but us insiders all know that dimsum is ten times better than overpriced (and over-hyped) appetizers.

Summit Garden has maintained status as our family's go-to destination for dimsum since day one. Overlooking the fact that many of the long-term staff members recognize us by face, the restaurant is situated in a convenient location and provides easy access to Chinese food whenever takeout is required.

Saturday morning dimsum was actually my suggestion - there is an undeniable lack of authenticity in the so-called "fusion" genre commonly found throughout downtown.

Just slightly past 11:00 AM, the restaurant was already bustling: family lunches were taking place at the many group tables lining the perimeter, while dimsum carts busily made their rounds weaving through tables.

After promptly being served Tieguanying (a type of oolong tea) and hot water, we took to waving down the cart ladies as they passed by. Xiu Mai (燒賣), black bean spareribs, mini hot dog buns, rice noodles, and stewed eggplant were chosen among several other standard picks.

We also opted to choose a few off the non-dimsum menu: blanched Gailan, Baked Golden Sago Pudding, and Vermicelli in Broth with Shredded Duck and Snow Cabbage.

It's quite a saddening statement to make, but the dishes ranged from average to subpar at best. The surface of the mini hot dog buns were coated with an unnecessary layer of oil, the Tofu Dessert was shockingly burnt-tasting, the Baked Golden Sago pudding was a congealed mess bearing little flavour other than that of granulated sugar and egg yolks, and the blanched Gailan hadn't even been cooked thoroughly before being served.
I've had several great experiences with both their dimsum and dinner menu prior to this visit, so it was undoubtedly frustrating to witness their food quality plummet. Perhaps the chefs have changed, or maybe it was an off day. I understand that neither qualify as a valid reason for declination, and thus would like to point out that their quality may not be as consistent as I imagined.

Following lunch, we embarked on a brief adventure at Playdium, where I stepped foot into a batting cage for the first time. And due to an unforeseen injury to my right hand, it'll probably be my last time in the area for a while as well.

Having digested the remnants of the food from brunch (aka dimsum), I suggested Pinkberry and a quick Chatime run.

The final event of the day was originally intended to yield gloat-worthy shots of the waterfront during sunset. However, we arrived at the shooting location much later than anticipated. It also hadn't helped that I had initially led us in the wrong direction.

The mellow waves eased tranquilly to and from the shore, rendering the entire scene to emit a very gentle vibe.

But alas, we weren't able to capture too many effective shots before the sky darkened to a deep, royal blue. And as the temperature dropped with the reduction of light, I was left with no other option than to pack up and head home for the day.

Sigh. I suppose there's always next time!
