Out & About #159 | Initium Co., Wooffles & Cream, and Gong Cha

11/7/2015

I'd be lying if I said that my eyes don't light up at the sight of gimmicks. But even so, my brain still manages to function adequately enough that my reason isn't swayed, especially seeing that the consequences would include unjustified financial losses and decreased productivity.

Initium Co.'s extravagant cotton candy lattes were first caught sight of on a casual Insta-search (can that please be a term??!) for GTA eateries. Extensive research followed from that moment onwards.
Picture
The concept behind Initium and their spherical tangle of hot pink string (ie. their logo) is to provide a space where customers can enjoy themselves at any point of the day, and heightening the overall experience by likening visits to "a journey".

Situated in a quiet plaza just off the 404 at Woodbine, the self-proclaimed café/salon/lounge hybrid occupies the space of two shops, and provides even more parking spots.
The shop can be accessed via two entrances: one on the left enables one to directly enter their café/bar area, while the right permits allowance to the hair salon. Regardless, the two sides are connected, meaning that activities taking place in one section can also be observed with ease from the other.
In the middle of the shop lies the reception desk, which utilizes the same white-magenta colour scheme as their logo.

Half of the total area is allocated for the salon: a hair-washing station (capable of serving four guests simultaneously) and at least ten seats for open-space hairstyling. An abundant selection of magazines can also be found in the centre of this space, along with a rack of salon gowns situated not too far from the reception desk. As Initium also described itself to be a lounge, it was noticed a few large, comfy chairs were also situated at the centre of the floor, bridging the café/bar and salon.

Curious as to how such a creatively-defined hybrid would deliver their services, I booked a much-needed haircut some two weeks before I knew I was due for a trip to Markham. Their prices were not listed anywhere on their website nor social media accounts, but the man who picked up the phone was glad to explain their services and associated fees. I was originally scheduled for 11:00 AM, but later rescheduled for 10:00 AM, the time at which the shop would open.

This being my first visit, I had no designated stylist. However, customers had the option of choosing between members of varying levels of seniority: (from high to low) Director, Senior Stylist, and Junior Stylist. Of course, the prices of the services provided by each of these roles would also differ accordingly.

Out & About #158 | Toronto Things: A Week of Exploration

11/6/2015

Admittedly, it's quite unheard of that I create a visuals post before reaching the end of the month. However, a sufficient amount of exploring has been accomplished over this week, and with it emerged a substantial quantity of associated images.
Of course, majority of these shots will be food-based, but I've also included a festive few.

1. The week started off with an ever-so-comforting Oolong Tea Latte (with decent swirled latte art, if I do say so myself!) DAVIDs TEA's Organic The Skinny has got to be the best variety of oolong ever - citrus-y with just the right depth of flavour.

2. A not-so-sharp photo of my Meatless Panini from Union Juice.

3. Carlton Cards was having a sale! Furry monkey cards and Christmas plushies always manage to make me smile.

4. Michaels has also started offering Christmas- and holiday-themed merchandise, all while lining the shelves of the lineup with small, adorable ty beanie babies.

5. The weather has recently taken a turn for the better, allowing for crews to film with increased ease.

7. There is a Starbucks located conveniently outside the York West Teamway of Union Station, though there is almost always a lineup. As with the Square One location, orders are handled quickly; the team is friendly, but several aspects are still lacking in comparison. One of these factors was their inability to contain their baked goods at the properly chilled temperatures - my Frosted Snowman Cookie was melting!

Out & About #157 | Brioche Dorée + Union Juice

11/2/2015

November has had a turn for the better with soaring temperatures, but that's not to say that I won't further my excursions in the PATH.

Brioche Dorée, a self-proclaimed "Parisian bakery" that started out in the Fashion District, has recently opened shop underneath Metro Centre.

While they oddly prevented the photo-taking of their products (it's free advertising though?), this attitude did not earn them any fewer customers than other businesses that opened at the same time.

Catering to the working morning crowd, the bakery begins their operations at 7:00 AM, as with McDonald's, Burger King, and trusty ol' Timmy's. The only difference is that there isn't a lineup, at least not yet anyway.
Picture
This new shop isn't as spacious as the images I've seen of its other location; with only a bar area consisting of roughly seven seats and the remaining area set aside for kitchen equipment, display cases, the cashier, a small refrigerator, and a lineup area, this new venture is clearly more of a grab-and-go spot.

Savoury options are found in one display case: quiches, ham-and-cheese croissants, pre-made crepes, etc. Another smaller case houses neatly-placed glimmering danishes, flaky croissants, and other varieties of glistening pastries. Above the cashier, a minimalistic drink menu makes customers aware of their basic selection of caffeinated hot beverages (Americano, cappuccino, and lattes), in addition to a few iced alternatives.

I'm not the biggest fan of butter, nor do I enjoy extraneous amounts of grease on my fingers. With that in mind, I approached the counter hoping that Brioche Dorée would be able to provide me with an item that was somewhat filling, but not excessively rich.
Picture
The process of careful inspection commenced. It was very much a Goldilocks moment – the danishes appeared too sweet, the croissants too buttery, and the twists too chocolatey for a morning snack. At last the Multigrain Croissant was chosen, as it appeared to be the only somewhat satisfying baked good available.

As I handed over my $2.50 plus tax, the croissant was warmed up and placed into a paper bag. There was also a combo option that included a small coffee, though it wasn't necessary for my particular level of mental alertness.
Picture
Unlike my initial perception, the croissant was far from dense, but instead considerably flaky. The oat bits, quinoa pieces, and flaxseeds coating the surface gave it a nice crunch, though the rest was soft and crumbly. It was also much richer than I would have preferred.

Clumsy as I am, a bite of the croissant immediately resulted in an unappealing mess of crumbs. Momentarily setting it back into the bag allowed me to catch sight of my now-greasy fingertips. Thank goodness for napkins!

Out & About #156 | Collective October Visuals

11/1/2015

October has generally consisted of inconsistent weather patterns, admiring the changing colours of leaves, and overdosing on caffeine to remain alert. Check out the shots below to find out more about this month's happenings!

1. Starbucks (THE PATH)
With winter almost upon us (it's Canada after all), my need for coffee and fall-inspired baked goods has never been stronger. This particular Starbucks location features small pieces of framed landscape/nature photographs in addition to this interesting slogan situated above the one of the condiment bars.
I must confess though: the Pumpkin Loaf wasn't quite as pumpkin-y as I would have enjoyed.

2. T& T (Langham Place)
This is the sole T&T location in Ontario that I've seen offer up as many packaged food, beauty, and Chinese literature books options as the ones in Vancouver. The biggest advantage of purchasing the store would have to be that they occasionally offer new products at lower prices than other ones, such as select My Beauty Diary masks.  Their adorably festive sponge cakes are pretty interesting to gaze upon as well.

3. zenQ (Markham)
Consisting of more than just waffles and snow ice, the franchise's expanded menu also consists of several meal items. I cannot recall the names of the dishes that we ordered for takeout, but all three were considerably satisfying. (The reusable takeout containers were, of course, a bonus.)
